Our €35 Birthday Cake: The Budget Cake Explained

Every week people come running into the bakery looking for a last minute cake for a birthday they forgot and don't want to show up empty handed to. Our Bento cakes are ready at the store, but often 4-5 slices are not enough, so many people were looking for something bigger than a Bento but more unassuming (and cheaper) than a Small Size cake (which serves 6-8, it’s 2 layers and 68 euros). 

We know that custom cakes can get expensive, especially when you're adding elaborate decorations, special shapes, multiple flavours or hours of hand-piped details. 

Our chef went back to the lab aka the kitchen and found a solution:  our €35 Budget Birthday Cake.

So... what's the catch?

Honestly? There isn't one. It's a simple lemon cake with vanilla cream, made by hand in our bakery in Berlin. It’s decorated enough to be a very cute gift, but without elaborate piping and customisation: a very good cake good for 8 people, 800g and costs €35.

Lemon cake + Vanilla cream

The lemon keeps it fresh and light, while the vanilla cream makes it feel like an actual birthday cake rather than just a basic sponge.

Simple and very cute. 

And yes, it's handmade

This is probably the most important part: it's made by us, in our bakery, just like our other cakes, but we wanted an affordable option that everyone can enjoy! 

We're a small bakery, and we still make our cakes by hand rather than producing hundreds of identical cakes in a factory. We use natural ingredients and don't add the kind of preservatives or additives that are used to make mass-produced cakes last for weeks.

Why is it only €35?

Because we're keeping it simple. The cake has one flavour, one size and a straightforward design. That means we can prepare it efficiently while still making everything from scratch.

You're paying for a handmade cake with good ingredients that tastes really good.

Who is it for?

Honestly, pretty much anyone who just needs a cake.

A birthday with friends, office birthday, dinner party,  last-minute celebration,  "we weren't going to get a cake but obviously we need cake" situation.

It serves around 8 people, so it's a great size for a small birthday without ending up with half a wedding cake left in your fridge.

But what if I want something more?

Then our Budget Birthday Cake probably isn't the cake for you, and that's totally fine.

If you have a Pinterest board with 47 reference pictures, a specific colour palette, a heart-shaped cake, vintage piping, bows, strawberries, cherries, pearls and a tiny edible figurine of your dog...We can do that too, and that's what our custom cakes are for (wink). The €35 cake is for when you want to keep things easy.
